DAY 1: Plymouth to Santander
Get yourself to Plymouth for the sailing at 1600hrs and then relax for the next 20hrs. Enjoy
beer and entertainment in the many bars on the ferry, get to know your travel companions, get a good nights sleep. No motorways, no ruined tyres – its got to be the best way of getting down to Spain.
DAY 2: Santander to San Sebastian
We will arrive at Santander at approximately 1200hrs. From Santander we will take the
coastal road along the beautiful Bay of Biscay towards San Sebastian. The coastline is spectacular and the town of San Sebastian is a real cultural gem. Set in the heart of the
Basque country, this tasteful resort has plenty of bars and restaurants especially in the old quarter.
DAY 3: San Sebastian to Huesca
Day 3 and we move away from the coast and into the ancient region of Navarra. This
region is famous for the annual Bull running festival in Pampalona and was immortalized by Ernest Hemingway in ‘For Whom The Bell Tolls’ and ‘The Sun Also Rises’.
From Pampalona we will pass into the Aragon Region of Spain and into the Guara National
Park. The Sierra du Guara are located in the lower Pyrenees and are renowned for their numerous canyons. The roads in this region are superb – twisty, relatively good surfaces, little traffic.
DAY 4: Huesca to Barcelona
This is a great motorcycling day as we travel through the foothills of the Pyrenees and into
Catalonia. The roads in Catalonia are an absolute joy, as good as any on the planet. The Catalan road system must have been designed by a motorcyclist – it is really that good.
There will be plenty of opportunities to admire the beautiful scenery and we will take the
time to visit a few of the attractions. In particular, we will visit the spectacular Monastery of Montserrat which is in mountains just North of Barcelona.
DAY 5: Barcelona
What can you possibly say about Barcelona. A truly spectacular ‘WorldCity’ with so much to
see and do.
You will have a whole day to wander through the La Rambla, visit Gaudi’s masterpieces
including the Sagrada Familia, enjoy the fantastic food and generally chill out.
DAY 6: Barcelona – Teruel
Back on the bikes, we head towards the Sierra du Gudar. The Sierra de Gudar is one of
Spain’s undiscovered mountain regions. The area is about to become one of Spain’s ‘natural’ parks due to its abundant wildlife and over 500 kilometres of marked paths through the
mountains. Peaks rise to over 6000 feet and changing landscapes offer views of dramatic river gorges with strange rock formations, limestone pavements carpeted in wild flowers and
soft rolling hills. This is pure, untouched Spain.
DAY 7: Teruel – Valencia
We will spend morning exploring the splendid mountain roads to the north of Valencia before
heading down to the city in the afternoon.
Valencia is a fantastic city, very lively especially when the MotoGp is in town. Explore
Valencia’s stunning beaches, old and modern architecture, bars and restaurants. There is something here for everyone.
DAY 8 : Valencia Moto-GP
Off to the Moto-GP. A great event, fantastic atmosphere, brilliant track and a grandstand
ticket. What more could you want?
DAY 9: Valencia - Cuenca
Day 9 and we will be starting our three day crossing through the heart of Spain. First we
will pass into the region of Castilla La Mancha, this area has remained virtually untouched by tourism, attracting only a sprinkling of Don Quixote devotees and “cultural tourists” keen for
a glimpse of the real Spain away from the crowded costas. Our first overnight stop will be the historic city of Cuenca. A beautiful and ancient city, it was declared a Unesco World
Heritage Ciity and is famous for its casas colgantes or casas colgadas ("hanging houses") on the edge of the gorge of the river Huécar.
DAY 10: Cuena - Segovia
Up into the Guadarrama mountains, North of Madrid. The roads in the foothills of this
mountainous region are a motorcyclists dream. The higher passes may be a bit cold but there will still be plenty of opportunity to have a bit of fun!
We will overnight at Segovia (yet another World Heritage Site); the Guadarrama mountains
form the dramatic backdrop to this fortified city. Historic landmarks include one of the world's best preserved Roman aqueducts and the fairytale-like Alcazar castle where Queen
Isabel promised Christopher Columbus the funds to discover the New World.
DAY 11: Segovia – Burgos.
Our penultimate day before we board the ferry. We will be making the most of the twisty
mountain roads as we make our way towards Burgos.
On the way to Burgos we will visit Atapuerca and the ‘Pit of Bones’. This World Heritage Site
is famous for the discovery of fossils and stone tools of the earliest known humans in Europe, dating to between 780,000 and 1 million years ago.
Burgos itself has a fantastic old quarter and beautiful cathedral. ‘El Cid’, Spain’s national
hero, was born in Burgos and is buried in the cathedral.
DAY 12: Burgos - Santander
Our final day will take us on a gentle ride northwards over the mountains to the South of
Santander. Make the most of the roads, mild climate and unique sights before boarding our evening ferry back to the U.K.
